Nintendo has tried to block homebrew during firmware updates in the past, often unsuccessfully. Now, as it rolls out version 4.3 of the Wii System Menu, stopping homebrew modifications once again seems to be its primary goal. From Nintendo’s support site: “Because unauthorized channels or firmware may impair game play or the Wii console, updating to Wii Menu version 4.3 will check for and automatically remove such unauthorized files.” Since it’s hard to bill that as an upgrade, they vaguely add, “In addition, there are some behind the scenes enhancements that do not affect any prominently-used features or menus but will improve system performance.”

An anonymous reader writes “Politicians in the Australian state of Victoria are currently locked in a debate about whether an injured man should be able to claim the cost of a Nintendo Wii for rehabilitation purposes under worker’s compensation. The man’s doctor apparently recommended he use the Wii Fit exercise device, but both insurance companies and the Government itself have blocked the payment and have now ridiculed the idea as paying for video games. But with the Wii Fit increasingly being used for rehabilitation purposes internationally, does the man have a fair case?”

A new report by Game Developer Research reveals that the number of developers working on games for the iPhone continues to rise, roughly doubling in number from last year. At the same time, the amount of work done on games for Nintendo’s Wii dropped significantly:
“Just over 70 percent of developers said they were developing at least one game for PC or Mac (including browser and social games), rising slightly from last year; 41 percent reported working on console games. Within that latter group, Xbox 360 was the most popular system with 69 percent of console developers targeting it, followed by 61 percent for PlayStation 3. While those console figures stayed within a few percent of last year’s results, the change in Wii adoption was much more significant: reported developer support for the system dropped from 42 percent to 30 percent of console developers, supporting numerous publishers’ claims of a recent softening of the Wii market.”

As high-definition graphics become more and more entrenched in this generation of game consoles, Nintendo has had to deal with constant speculation about a new version of the Wii that would increase its capabilities. Today, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime bluntly denied that a hardware revision was imminent, saying, “We are confident the Wii home entertainment console has a very long life in front of it.” He added, “In terms of what the future holds, we’ve gone on record to say that the next step for Nintendo in home consoles will not be to simply make it HD, but to add more and more capability, and we’ll do that when we’ve totally tapped out all of the experiences for the existing Wii. And we’re nowhere near doing that yet.”

Logically, the audience for a wide range of games and interactive experiences should be rather big, but based on the evidence so far, either that’s not true — or publishers have been hedging the wrong bets. No one has conclusively proved the case for (or against) the viability of mature games on Wii, but 2009 was a litmus test on a number of fronts, including the DS. The results aren’t encouraging. “
