From the latest project update: ‘As if the Ice Age was exclusively the name of a movie, or if Dice Age was a movie itself, the 20th century fox has just asked for an extent of time (till 10-26-2011) to oppose to the registering of our beloved Dice Age game name. My point of view, as a scientist, is the Ice age is a geological era before it is a movie.”"

Ubisoft made headlines a couple days ago for bringing back their restrictive DRM for an upcoming racing game. Speaking with PCGamer in response to the overwhelmingly negative feedback to this news, a Ubisoft representative said the company has seen “a clear reduction in piracy of our titles which required a persistent online connection,” adding, “from that point of view the requirement is a success.” One wonders how they measured this, and how they compare it to sales lost due to the bad press it’s generated.

Daetrin writes “Nintendo has announced a large loss for the first quarter of the year and lowered its annual profit forecast. In the three months prior to June 30th Nintendo lost 25.5 billion yen ($328 million) and the forecast is being reduced about 80%, from 110 billion yen ($1.4 billion) to 20 billion yen ($257 million). Nintendo is blaming poor sales of the 3DS and is responding by announcing a price cut from $250 to $170 on August 12. In order to mollify early adopters of the system Nintendo also announced that anyone who has logged into the Nintendo eShop before the price cut will receive 10 free NES games and 10 free GBA games. The GBA games won’t be available until later in the year, but Nintendo claims they will be exclusive to the ’3DS Ambassadors’ and will not be available for purchase on the store in the future.”
A related op-ed at Wired suggests the new price is still too high, given the rise of cheap portable games on various app stores.

Last year Ubisoft introduced DRM for their PC games that required a constant internet connection, going so far as to terminate single-player games if the connection was interrupted. After facing outrage, boycotts, and DDoS attacks, Ubisoft seemed to have softened their stance, issuing a patch for two games that allowed offline play. Unfortunately, it seems the change wasn’t permanent; Ubisoft’s upcoming racing game Driver: San Francisco marks the return of the contentious DRM.

derGoldstein tips a story at AllThingsD about a study into mobile gamers’ spending habits:
“[The study] provides a fairly compelling argument as to why a developer should continue to give away his or her games for free … After evaluating the spending habits of 3.5 million consumers across both iOS and Android, Flurry found that among those who pay for in-app transactions, greater than five percent will spend more than $50, which rivals the amount paid at retail for top console and PC games.”

A Chinese couple who really like to game are under arrest for selling their kids and converting the money into game currency. From the article: “In 2009, Li Lin and Li Juan welcomed their second child, a baby girl, and came up with the idea to sell her for money to fund their online game obsession. They did so, receiving RMB 3,000 (less than $500), which they spent entirely shortly after. The couple then proceeded to sell their first child and got 10 times as much for him — RMB 30,000, or about $4600. Upon having their third child — another boy — the parents followed in their previous footsteps and also got RMB 30,000 for him.” I wonder what the “kid seller” achievement looks like?

donniebaseball23 writes “Xbox 360 has been having an incredible year so far in 2011, but on a global scale Sony’s PS3 is still gaining ground. In fact, this year PS3 has outpaced Xbox 360 by 10% worldwide, analysts have pointed out. While the Wii has clearly won the race for this console generation, the battle for second place is neck and neck, and PS3 has a good shot of overtaking Xbox 360. ‘As for second place, as far as the hardcore market is concerned, I’d say PS3 is a strong contender for that position,’ commented M2 Research analyst Billy Pidgeon.”
