Players who engage in a fast-paced snowball fight with penguins and snowmen report feeling less pain. SnowWorld was developed by Professor Hunter Hoffman and Professor David Patterson at the University of Washington Harborview Burn Center in Seattle. Hoffman said, ‘Because humans are so visually dominant, wherever you’re looking typically that’s where your attention is focused. (For patients) during wound care, when they’re getting their bandages changed, they’re looking at these different tools that the nurses are using to treat them, and just looking at those objects makes them anxious. They begin to associate objects in the room with high pain so you can imagine that day after day they start to develop psychological associations between the treatment room and pain, amplifying how much pain they experience.’”

itwbennett writes “Sony may be planning to have three platforms (Android devices, NGP, PS3) running PlayStation Suite content and needing access to the same saved data stored in the cloud, says blogger Peter Smith. At last week’s PlayStation Meeting, game developer Hideo Kojima said his ‘dream’ was to offer the same game on the PS3 and the new PlayStation Portable with saves in the cloud. If Kotaku has it right, that dream may be coming in firmware version 3.6. Also, in an interview with Engadget, Sony’s Jack Tretton first said that PlayStation Suite games would work on the PS3. He then retracted that comment, but it’s sounding a lot like Sony just isn’t ready to talk officially about plans to bring Suite content to the PS3, says Smith.”

On January 27, Sony Computer Entertainment America sent a DMCA takedown notice to GitHub demanding the removal of 6 repositories under the ‘circumvention device’ clause of the DMCA. All of the repositories in question were related to jailbreaking or homebrew development for the PS3.”

A team at MIT has recreated the famous 3D Princess Leia scene from the original Star Wars — but as a live video feed! It’s a great stunt but don’t miss the importance — this is realtime 3D holography and that means you can view it without any glasses or other gadgets and you can move around and see behind objects in the scene. This is more than the flat 3D you get in movies.”

donniebaseball23 writes “id co-founder and all-around programming genius John Carmack, who has become a bigger fan of the iPhone and iOS platform recently, has given his take on the technical aspects of Sony’s Next Generation Portable. He says that ‘the Sony NGP [will] perform about a generation beyond smart phones with comparable specs.’ Essentially, the fast approaching round of iOS and Android devices will still be well behind the capabilities of Sony’s new handheld, which comes close to reproducing PS3-like visuals.”
New details have emerged since the NGP’s confirmation yesterday: there will be different versions of the device, all of which can connect over Wi-Fi, but only one of which has 3G connectivity. The battery life will be similar to the original PSP, and the NGP will have two proprietary memory card slots. Sony says they considered 3D for the device, but they don’t see how it translates to portable gaming. 1up has a hands-on with the NGP, as well as video of Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 tech demo.

An anonymous reader tips news that following the airport bombing in Moscow earlier this week, the Russia media is linking the attack to a scene from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in which a number of civilians were gunned down inside an airport.
“Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has become a shocking reality … with so many people seemingly downloading, playing or watching this game, you have to consider whether or not anybody actually thought this game could so closely resemble reality,’ said a Russia Today news presenter in the report. It also included comments from US terrorism expert Walid Phares, who said it was possible that computer games might influence the strategies employed by terrorists. Phares, who is director of Future Terrorism Project at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said: ‘The issue is we need to know if terrorists or extremists are using these videos or DVDs or games to basically apply the model.’ ‘I think those who have been radicalized already – that is supposed in this case jihadists, Al-Qaeda or other kind – they look at the games and say these games will serve them to train.’”
As we discussed when the game came out, Activision edited out the controversial scene from the Russian version. Violent video games have been taking a similar beating in the US after the shooting in Arizona earlier this month.

tekgoblin writes “Today Sony has released a firmware update for the PS3 console that will update it to version 3.56. This comes on the same day news broke on the restraining order against George Hotz (Geohot). Sony did not state that it would stop jailbreaking the console but we can only assume that it does. With this restraining order against Geohot we see the Streisand Effect taking hold again as the key spreads all over the net. This decision by the courts may also prompt more hackers to focus their time on the PS3 from other projects. Be aware if you update your system and you like to jailbreak or hack, you will probably be unable to after the update.”

Actually, it might be possible after all.

Sony filed this lawsuit because they were unhappy that Geohot had released the Playstation 3 decryption keys so other people could play unsigned games on it. [Geohot is prohibited from] ‘offering to the public, creating, posting online, marketing, advertising, promoting, installing, distributing, providing, or otherwise trafficking’ in any software or methods for circumventing the PS3′s protection methods. No longer can he ‘provide links from any website to any other website’ relating to such matters, or publish any information obtained by hacking the PS3. And more to the point, he can no longer ‘engage in acts of circumvention of TPMS in the PS3 System to access, obtain, remove, or traffic in copyrighted works.’ Pretty much he can’t talk or think about the PS3 for some time.”

Pantomation let users interact in real-time with a digital environment and props. It was built using Apple IIe’s, analog video gear, and lots of custom hacking and patching. He’s currently working on a holographic 3D system that’s similarly ahead of its time.”

In a finding by a three judge panel of the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, D&D ‘can mimic the organization of gangs and lead to the actual development thereof.’ From the ruling: ‘during D&D games, one player is denoted the “Dungeon Master.” ‘The Dungeon Master is tasked with giving directions to other players, which Muraski testified mimics the organization of a gang.’”
